Subject	Removal of block check valves?

Message	I am trying to remove the check valves on the deck of the block. So far I have tried screwing a screw in and pulling on them but that usually ends up with the screw thread being stripped off or the screw breaking off in there. What is the correct way to remove these things? I have visited NAPA, Autozone, O'reileys and ACE for some type of pulling tool but couldn't find one.
